Knob & Tube Wiring
Many homes built prior to 1930 utilized knob and tube wiring. The simple system consisted of electrical wiring wrapped around ceramic knobs to securely fasten them at a distant from combustible framework. The method worked for the simple electrical needs of households at the time, but as energy consumption and electronic technology improved, knob and tube wiring became inefficient for a number of reasons and was abandoned. While most modern homes do not still retain knob and tube wiring, some do. If you own one of these homes, OC Services can replace and upgrade your electrical wiring system.
One of the most common hazards with surviving knob and tube wiring systems is that over time the wire insulation likely has been removed due to heat or rodents, leaving exposed wire within the frame of your home. Since knob and tube wiring also no longer meets modern electrical safety standards, it is best to have it replaced with an up to date electrical wiring system. The wiring system’s lack of implementing grounding conductors, not confining switching to the hot conductor and use of in-line splices without a junction box could leave your home at risk of electrical fire.
Aluminum Wiring Replacement
Homes built prior to 1972 likely were built using aluminum wire in their electrical wiring system. At the time aluminum was the most affordable conductive material. Since then, however, copper has replaced aluminum in both affordability and conductivity. Now, copper is the standard used in all wiring and wire connectors in modern electrical work. If your home still has aluminum wiring, you could be at risk of a few potential hazards. If you have had to replace any of your outlets, light switches or any other connector to your wiring, the new connectors are made of copper. Since copper and aluminum expand and contract at different temperatures, your connectors will likely be loosened from your wiring at some point. This presents an arcing hazard, which can cause fires. That is why it would be best for the safety of your home and electronic devices to upgrade your electrical wiring system and replace your aluminum wiring. At OC Services, we’ve been bringing Keller homes up to date by replacing their aluminum wiring since 1995. With your safety as our ultimate concern, we encourage all households that have archaic electrical wiring systems to let us replace them with modern standard wiring.
